Why Kenya Wants Tata Chemicals Out After 100 Years Of Mining | Explained
After nearly a century of operations, Tata Chemicals is being ordered to leave Kenya. President William Ruto has accused the Indian company of exporting soda ash without doing enough to process the mineral into finished products locally. Speaking in Magadi, Ruto said Tata has held mining rights for a hundred years yet failed to build significant local industry in Kajiado. The government plans to bring in two new companies to process soda ash into glass and chemicals within Kenya. Mining rights are said to have expired in 2023, and operations were already suspended weeks earlier over unpaid royalties and other compliance issues.
