Under pressure, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is due to speak at a Berlin press conference after his Christian Democrats (CDU) party suffered a humiliating defeat to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a regional election. The CDU saw its support drop to 17.2% in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt in Sunday’s vote. The result raises serious questions about the longstanding refusal of Germany’s mainstream parties to work with the AfD, a policy known as the “firewall.”
