China’s ‘Hidden Dragon’ J-16 To Face France’s Rafale In Joint Air Exercise In Egypt
China’s most advanced multirole fighter, the J-16, is training on African soil for the first time as part of the Eagles of Civilization 2026 joint air exercise with Egypt. The drills, launched on 22 August across several Egyptian air bases, mark a significant step in China-Egypt military cooperation. The twin-seat 4.5-generation J-16, known as the “Hidden Dragon,” completed a 6,000-kilometre journey with mid-air refuelling to reach Egypt. This is the aircraft’s longest-range deployment yet. Last year China sent the lighter J-10C; this year’s heavier J-16 signals an upgrade in capability. Egypt, a US strategic partner that operates F-16s, is balancing ties with China in this rare joint exercise that pits Chinese fighters against Western platforms far from traditional flashpoints.
