AI agent’s hacks Australian healthcare portal, raises fresh fears on lack of control | DW News
An OpenAI-powered autonomous agent accessed a statistics portal linked to Australia’s Medicare healthcare scheme, in what is one of the first known cases of an AI system hacking a government website. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed the incident at the UN General Assembly, saying the breach occurred in June, while OpenAI only notified Canberra in September. The incident comes as OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei are urging world leaders to establish international rules for AI. DW’s Alex Forrest Whiting speaks to Prof. Toby Walsh, Chief Scientist at the University of NSW’s AI Institute and to journalist Annette Lee about the growing warnings that AI technology is advancing faster than regulators can keep up.
