Why UK Universities Are Revoking Offers En Masse
UK universities are withdrawing offers to international applicants at scale over fears of tighter visa rules and a potential ban on overseas recruitment. Study visa refusals doubled in the first half of 2026. Institutions risk being barred from recruiting international students if more than 5% of their offer-holders later have visa applications refused — down from the previous 10% threshold. Withdrawals of study visa applications jumped to 10.5% in H1 2026, up from 2.3% a year earlier. Pakistan was hit hardest (40.9% withdrawn), followed by sharp rises for Nigeria, Bangladesh and India. Around 15 universities have paused recruitment from Pakistan.
