Why SpaceX Is Crashing Its Falcon 9 Rocket Into The Moon | Explained
A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage, left adrift after a January 2025 mission, is on a collision course with the Moon. The roughly 3.9-tonne stage is expected to strike near the Einstein Crater on Wednesday at 6:35 AM UTC (12:05 PM IST) at about 8,700 km/h. It is projected to create a 27-metre crater and a dust plume rising up to 100 km. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri will observe the impact. Scientists are keen to study the debris for insights into impact dynamics and the Moon’s surface.
