Why Fauci hearing was similar to ‘McCarthyism’
Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Senate hearing was “a witch hunt” and “McCarthyism,” The New Yorker’s Susan Glasser told Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg on Friday.
Fauci, who helped lead the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic under Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions during the GOP-led hearing Wednesday about the origins of the virus and the government’s pandemic response. Sen. Rand Paul subpoenaed Fauci to appear before the committee.
“I found it very painful to watch, as I’m sure many people did,” Glasser said of the hearing. “The person who was accountable ultimately for America’s failed initial handling of the pandemic in 2020 was someone named Donald Trump.”
