Why Are London’s Schools Shutting Down, 90+ Closed Since 2019
London is closing schools as the number of children falls. More than 90 schools have shut since 2019, driven by lower birth rates, families leaving the city after Brexit and Covid, and high housing costs. In Hackney, primary pupil numbers are already down 15% since before the pandemic and projected to fall further. Neighbouring Islington faces a 22% drop, the sharpest in the country. Empty school buildings are now being converted into temporary housing for homeless families.
