Who is Elizabeth Holmes, the former chief executive officer of biotech firm Theranos and subject of the new Nathan Fielder documentary “You Can See Everything”?
Along with Theranos president and Chief Operating Officer Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors of hundreds of millions of dollars. They claimed that Theranos’ blood testing machines were a revolutionary technology, and that their machines could produce a more accurate and less expensive test result with only a finger prick.
Trial evidence showed Holmes knew the Theranos machines did not work, and that Holmes and Balwani falsely represented test results to pharmaceutical companies. Theranos even inked a deal to put their machines in Walgreens stores across the country.
The disgraced tech CEO is now the subject of “You Can See Everything,” after comedian and filmmaker Nathan Fielder was granted access to follow Holmes in the weeks leading up to her imprisonment.
Fielder, perhaps best known for the HBO series “The Rehearsal,” is known for his intricate recreations and rehearsals. In one episode, he painstakingly recreates a New York City bar so a participant can practice revealing a secret to his trivia team inside the familiar space. Fielder then reveals he also rebuilt the participant’s apartment so he could rehearse their first meeting.
