What’s Syria’s strategic relevance? | DW News


Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has sought to reshape the country’s foreign ties. While longtime ally Iran has lost ground, Russia is working to maintain its foothold. In the meantime, other regional powers, such as Turkey and the Gulf states, are vying for influence. The EU and the US are also recalibrating their approach to Syria. Why do so many states are cozying up to al-Sharaa?
