What message is Putin trying to send with Russia’s escalating strikes on Ukraine? | DW News

Russia could be in for more punishing sanctions over its war in Ukraine, as Donald Trump signalled that he’s ready to impose more restrictions.

The US President’s comments came after Russia’s massive weekend attack on Ukraine. Kyiv officials described it as the biggest aerial barrage of the entire war. The US Special Envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said the attack – which included a strike on a government building – appeared to mark an escalation in the conflict. President Trump has been trying to negotiate an end to the war – in recent months, he threatened Russian President Vladimir Putin with tougher measures, though nothing has yet materialised.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that now is the time for action.
