What does forced labor really have to do with Trump’s tariffs? | DW News


Are the new US tariffs really intended to combat forced labor around the globe, as Washington claims? Or is it about the Trump administration asserting its power?

The United States has slapped new tariffs on 60 economies. After facing legal challenges to previous tariffs, the Trump administration is making use of a little-known law that allows it to impose levies on countries that buy products made by forced labor.

Simon J. Evenett, professor at IMD Business School, tells host Pablo Foley Elias that the forced labor explanation is a “contrivance.” DW’s Kassandra Sundt explains that the tariffs place a high burden on vulnerable countries to prove that they do not buy products made by forced labor.
