WATCH: Trump describes moments leading to shooting outside White House Correspondents’ Dinner
President Donald Trump praised Secret Service and law enforcement officers for stopping a gunman at a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.
In a quickly arranged news conference at the White House, the president described being whisked away by Secret Service after shots rang out in checkpoint area. Attendees at the dinner were told to get down and take cover during the incident.
A suspect is in custody, said Trump, still dressed in his black tuxedo.
The president also said he wanted to return to the event following the incident, though the association behind the annual event said the dinner will be rescheduled.
