WATCH: Newsom on whether he’d support impeaching Trump
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 election hopeful, was asked by PBS News if he’d want Democrats to again impeach President Donald Trump if the party wins back majority control of Congress after the midterms elections.
“Wherever the facts lead,” Newsom said.
“I’m not naive about the politics of that because it will be a sideshow in distraction,” he told co-anchor Amna Nawaz. “What I don’t want to do is see another impeachment that amounts to nothing except a virtue signal.”
Instead, the governor said he’d rather see focus on other issues, such as affordable insulin and doing more on paid sick and family leave, and universal healthcare.
Newsom, who has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics, added that there ought to be “accountability across the board.”
“It’s not just Trump,” he said. “It’s all the folks that are complicit in this great grift. It’s the folks who are complicit in the rank corruption that is going on in this administration.”
