Watch LIVE Reform UK’s Farage Unveils Plan to Suspend Asylum Claims and Deport Failed Applicants
Nigel Farage has pledged to suspend the UK’s asylum system for up to five years if Reform UK wins the next general election, unveiling a sweeping immigration policy at a press conference in Hythe, England, on October 12.
Farage said around 90,000 pending asylum applications would be declared void, new claims would be automatically rejected, and failed applicants would be deported to their home countries or a safe third country. He also proposed leaving the European Convention on Human Rights, repealing the Human Rights Act and temporarily disapplying the 1951 Refugee Convention.
The plan includes potential tariffs, visa bans and airspace restrictions against countries that refuse to accept deportees. Reform UK says the measures are needed to address what Farage describes as a national security emergency. The proposals would require a Reform UK government to implement them if the party wins power.
The announcement comes ahead of the next UK general election, due by 2029. Reuters reported that Britain received 85,891 asylum applicants in the year ending June 2026, down 21% from the previous year. Refugee charities have warned that the proposed deportations could put people at risk of persecution or serious harm if returned to countries such as Afghanistan or Iran.
