WATCH: How Trump and Republicans reacted to midterm losses
Republicans are in a “pretty dark place right now,” after Tuesday’s midterm election results, PBS News correspondent Lisa Desjardins said Wednesday.
“This was a really cataclysmic election for them,” she said, adding that Democrats’ gains surpassed the big wins they saw in the 2018 midterms, when the party won a majority in the House.
“They don’t know what they’re going to do next,” she said of the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, there’s been mixed messaging from the White House, White House correspondent Liz Landers said. Trump spoke with a number of news outlets on election night and in the hours that followed, extending congratulations to Democrats and saying he looked forward to working with them.
But one official told her that the mood was defiant at the White House. Trump posted an image Tuesday night of a red MAGA hat, adorned with an all-caps “VETO.”
“That doesn’t exactly scream working with Democrats in Congress if he’s posting something like this,” Landers said.
