WATCH: Hegseth says not getting supplemental funding would strain troop ‘training and readiness’
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said not receiving supplemental funding would “put strains on training and readiness” for U.S. troops during a hearing on President Donald Trump’s supplemental funding request.
“When you’re saying we’re focused on training and readiness and lethality, but we have to cut back on training because Congress can’t get the money we need to the department, that’s discouraging at every single level,” Hegseth told Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.
The Trump administration has requested $87.6 billion in supplemental funding, the bulk of which would be used for the U.S. war with Iran.
Hegseth’s appearance before Senate lawmakers comes after the U.S. rolled out its 10th consecutive night of strikes against Iran. At least three American service members have been killed in recent days. As war between the two nations intensifies, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, forcing U.S. gas prices to jump again.
