WATCH: Emilee Hackney on seeing the ‘unseen’ of Appalachia
Appalachia is more than a “stereotype,” says author Emilee Hackney.
“I would like for people to understand that Appalachia is not just one thing,” Hackney told PBS News’ Amna Nawaz. “It’s not just the stereotype in your head, and there can be a lot of different experiences of what Appalachia is based on.”
Hackney grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia.
In her memoir, “All That’s Unseen: An Appalachian Memoir,” she talks about growing up the region and trying to reconcile with it ever since she left. She joined Amna Nawaz for the latest episode of PBS News’ podcast, Settle In, to discuss her book and more.
