WATCH: 3 things to know about back-to-school sales tax holidays
It’s back-to-school shopping season, and this year the average family with K-12 students plans to spend more than $860 on school clothes, electronics and supplies, according to the National Retail Federation.
Some states implement what is called a “sales tax holiday” this time of year to relieve families of some of that cost. While the holidays may sound like a good deal, they not be beneficial for everyone.
PBS News’ Cecilia Lallmann spoke with Katherine Loughead, vice president of state tax policy at the Tax Foundation, about how the holidays work and what families should consider.
