U.S. strikes Iran after attempted attacks against ships
The U.S. military says it struck targets inside Iran again Tuesday in response to what it called recent attempted attacks against ships in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. service members in the region.
Iranian media says the country has responded with strikes of its own. The latest exchange of fire comes just hours after Iran said it would be willing to go back to the cease-fire agreement reached with Washington earlier this summer.
Speaking at a summit attended by Iran’s key allies China and Russia, Iran’s president struck a more conciliatory tone than usual in remarks broadcast on state television, saying, “If the United States returns to its commitments in the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate.”
In a separate event with Russia’s president, Iran’s leader insisted that his country will be able to stand against what he called America’s unjust sanctions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent vowed Tuesday to hit Iran with additional sanctions as soon as this week, saying, “We are going to economically asphyxiate this regime.”
Bessent added that he thinks Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz will be short-lived. He said that, as countries find more alternate routes to ship oil and other assets from the region, the strait will be rendered, as he put it, a worthless piece of water in two years.
