China and the United States have extended their trade truce through to January 10, 2027, following a summit between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump in Washington. China’s commerce ministry confirmed the two-month extension, saying it offers policy stability and a predictable environment for companies. Beyond the headline, the two sides agreed on a new trade council, a reciprocal tariff cut covering $30 billion of goods, an agriculture working group, a coal import deal under which China will buy 10 million tonnes of US coal annually, an AI incident communication channel, and commitments on financial services access and more direct flights.
