Trump recalls time he shared Graham’s cell number at rally
President Donald Trump said Tuesday during a memorial service that his relationship with the late Sen. Lindsey Graham “did not exactly get off to the best of starts.”
During his eulogy for Graham, who died earlier this month at age 71, Trump recalled an anecdote from the 2016 presidential campaign when both men were running for the Republican nomination.
“Naturally, I did something that I shouldn’t have done. I shared his personal cellphone number with the millions of people that happened to be watching that particular day as I made a speech, a very important speech,” Trump said.
“And I remember the number,” he added, reciting a number with a 202 area code, “if anybody wants to give it a shot.”
Graham’s “phone exploded,” Trump said. “That was the beginning of a friendship, in a way.”
“But it was Lindsay who had the last laugh, because while I blew up his phone for one day, we became great friends,” Trump said. “And Lindsey did not stop calling me for the next 10 years.”
Hundreds came to pay their respects to the longtime lawmaker. Earlier in the day, Graham was recognized in a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda, which included tributes from Rep. Sheri Biggs, R-S.C., Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Vice President JD Vance.
