Trump Just Took Venezuela’s Oil (Here’s What Happens Next)

Trump Just Took Venezuela’s Oil. This past weekend marked one of the most consequential geopolitical developments we have seen in years. President Trump announced that the United States has effectively taken control of Venezuela’s oil operations following the removal of Nicolás Maduro. On the surface, this was framed as a political or security issue, but when you peel back the layers, this is really an energy and power story.

Venezuela holds roughly 303 billion barrels of oil reserves, about 20 percent more than Saudi Arabia. The catch is that most of this oil is heavy crude. Heavy crude is thick, expensive to extract, and difficult to refine. But here is where strategy comes into play. The United States has spent decades building some of the largest and most advanced heavy crude refineries in the world, especially in Texas and Louisiana. At the same time, the US has quietly become dependent on heavy crude, with roughly 70 percent of imports now falling into that category.

Sanctions hollowed out Venezuela’s infrastructure, causing production to collapse from over 3 million barrels per day in the early 2000s to under 1 million. Meanwhile, US production surged. Canada filled the gap, with its share of US oil imports rising from about 15 percent to roughly 60 percent, while Venezuelan imports steadily declined. That shift looks far from accidental.

This move also reshapes global power dynamics. Venezuela is one of the few places that can compete with Russia in heavy crude. China is currently Venezuela’s largest buyer, accounting for about 5 percent of its oil imports. Control energy flows and you control leverage.

But history matters. Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan all show that removing leadership rarely leads to stability. Energy infrastructure becomes a target, corruption rises, and markets price in volatility instead of certainty. Oil does not get cheaper. It gets riskier.

Venezuela’s oil and massive natural gas reserves are real. The question is not whether the resources exist. It is whether stability can exist long enough to extract them efficiently. That uncertainty is the real macro risk markets should be watching.
