The US floated an AI hotline with China. Beijing hasn’t signed on.

Xi Jinping spent about three and a half hours at the White House and roughly ninety minutes of it on policy. What came out is a two-month extension of the trade truce, pushing the deadline to January 10 and holding tariff rates and China’s rare earth commitments where they are. On AI, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent floated a notification mechanism on Sunday that others have called a hotline. Ben Werschkul explains why China has not publicly agreed to it, and why it looks nothing like the Cold War hotlines it is being compared to.
