The Legacy of Stephen Siller: The Firefighter Who Ran Toward Danger on 9/11
On September 11, 2001, FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller was on his way home when he heard that a plane had hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. He turned around, grabbed 60 pounds of gear, and ran on foot through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel toward the Twin Towers and never returned home. 25 years later, his extraordinary courage lives on through the Tunnel to Towers 5K, honoring Stephen and all those who ran toward danger to save others. Former Deputy Assistant to President George W. Bush and current board member of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Brad Blakeman says, “the retracing of Stephen’s steps is a lesson of what a hero can do” adding, “this is a lesson in patriotism, this is a lesson of history…of compassion.”
