MADRID, SPAIN – Dozens of housing protesters remain camped out at Madrid’s downtown square, Puerta del Sol, a day after thousands marched through the city to demand political action to stop evictions and ease the housing crisis.
The eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her home has sparked a wave of spontaneous solidarity across Spain. Her eviction took place Wednesday, despite dozens of people who had waited outside her home since the previous night trying to prevent it. That afternoon, nearly 10,000 people, according to Spanish government officials in Madrid, gathered in the capital to protest. Tens of thousands marched through Madrid on Saturday, and some demonstrators camped overnight in Puerta del Sol, where more people, including families of several generations, joined them Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Protesters are demanding stronger tenant protections and a ban on evictions when no other housing is available nearby. Similar protests and expressions of solidarity have also taken place in Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia.
Abascal is hospitalized at Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where she is awaiting medical tests. In a video message to supporters, she urged them to “keep fighting” for their homes.
