Protests over school conditions sweep France

More than 250,000 protesters rallied Tuesday across France, an escalation of weeks of protests against what they describe as inequalities in the country’s education system.

From Marseille to Paris, Strasbourg to Nantes, protesters marched in support of a movement that began in mid-September when teachers and students at a high school in a suburb of Paris mobilized around a lack of staff. Protesters in some areas on Tuesday lit fires and clashed with police, who in turn deployed tear gas at the protesters.

Students and their supporters say schools in disadvantaged areas are more likely to be short staffed, have poor facilities and lack educational opportunities. French students have among the longest school days in the European Union.

More than 6,000 arrests, mostly of minors, have been made since the protests began. Hundreds of protesters and police officers have been injured.
