‘No clear leader’ in Kansas Senate race; Enten unpacks why that’s a shock

According to new CNN polls, in deep-red Kansas, there is no clear leader between Democrat Adam Hamilton (49%) and Republican Sen. Roger Marshall (45%), even as likely voters there say they would prefer Republicans to control the Senate. Voters here largely view Marshall unfavorably and say their choices are about Marshall more so than Hamilton.

In Kansas, the most Republican-friendly of the four states polled, only about one-third hold a positive view of the Democratic Party. But Hamilton, like Talarico, is overperforming his party – even as he’s a lesser-known quantity. In this case, the more relevant number may be Marshall’s underperformance and unpopularity. Most likely voters say that they view the Republican nominee negatively, and a 59% majority of Hamilton’s backers say they’re motivated primarily by opposition to Marshall.
