Mayor Mamdani Plans Rule Requiring Human Help After Chatbot Chats, Touts AI Moratorium for Students

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said artificial intelligence must be regulated at every level of government, with the most urgent response needed nationally, during an off-topic question-and-answer session following a child care announcement at BronxWorks.

The mayor had just announced that the city is taking children off the child care voucher wait list for the first time in 15 months. More than 29,000 children are on the list. About 10,000 will be moved off now, with more to follow on a rolling basis. The announcement was backed by Governor Kathy Hochul’s $1.2 billion child care investment, which included $475 million to stabilize and expand the voucher program. Families in the program, and those coming off the wait list, will not pay co-pays.

Reporters from City & State, NY1, and Politico then pressed the mayor on AI. Council Speaker Julie Menin and the City Council have proposed AI legislation, including a bill that would require a “kill switch” function in any AI system deployed by the city.
