Man Who Exposed Tobacco Industry In The 90s Sounds Alarm On Big Tech
Jeffrey Wigand, the legendary whistleblower who exposed Big Tobacco in the 1990s, says history is repeating itself with social media giants. After a landmark Los Angeles jury verdict found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young user through addictive platform design (autoplay, infinite scroll, and algorithmic recommendations), Wigand called the tactics “eerily familiar.” He accused both industries of deliberately targeting children with addictive products for profit, knowing the risks but ignoring them. The jury awarded $6 million in damages, including $3 million in punitive damages — the first time a US jury has held major tech platforms responsible for addictive design aimed at minors. Wigand warns this could be Big Tech’s “Big Tobacco moment,” potentially opening the floodgates to billions in future lawsuits.
