LIVE: Why is Germany still so divided – 36 years after reunification? | DW news

Germany is marking German Unity Day, with the main national celebrations in Bremen, where President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be speaking. More than 400,000 people are expected to attend the public festival, which runs through Sunday. It was October 3, 1990, when the five states of the former East Germany joined the Federal Republic of Germany, formally ending the long division following World War II. More than three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the consequences of reunification are still heavily contested. Disparities between eastern and western Germany persist, particularly in pay and wealth. Some eastern Germans also argue they still have too little recognition in national institutions. President Steinmeier is expected to discuss his concerns over the strength of democracy in the face of political extremes, and argue for greater equality and unity.
