LIVE | ‘Trump Made a Huge Mistake’: Mearsheimer on the Iran War | US Iran Conflict | Mojtaba
Professor John Mearsheimer delivers a sharply critical assessment of Donald Trump’s Middle East policy, focusing on the Iran war, Gaza and the US-Israel relationship.
In his keynote address at the Arab Center’s Eleventh Annual Conference, Mearsheimer argues that Trump was “bamboozled” into going to war with Iran and questions why the US president proceeded despite concerns from American officials about the risks of the strategy.
Mearsheimer also argues that the conflict has produced serious strategic consequences for Washington, including strengthening Iran, threatening the US position in the Middle East and complicating America’s broader strategic focus on Asia.
He is equally critical of Trump’s policy towards Israel and Gaza. Mearsheimer describes Israel’s campaign in Gaza as ethnic cleansing and genocide, and argues that Washington has become too closely aligned with Israeli policy.
The political scientist also examines Trump’s public statements about Iran, his decision-making process and what Mearsheimer sees as a reluctance to accept responsibility when foreign-policy decisions fail.
The address concludes with a warning about the possibility of further escalation in the Middle East, including the risk of a wider confrontation involving Israel, Iran and the United States.
This video focuses on Mearsheimer’s arguments and criticisms. Claims about Trump, Israel, Iran and the Gaza war are attributed to Mearsheimer and represent his analysis of US foreign policy.
