SpaceX filed its S-1 last night. The headlines call it a space IPO but the filing shows something else: the most vertically integrated AI infrastructure bet ever attempted.
xAI is now a SpaceX segment, with $12.7 billion in AI capex last year, more than the launch and Starlink businesses combined. Anthropic just signed on as a $1.25 billion per month customer of SpaceX’s data centers through 2029. There’s a chip manufacturing project with Tesla and Intel called Terafab, targeting a terawatt of compute per year. And the long-term plan is to put AI data centers in orbit, with deployments starting as soon as 2028.
