Hundreds of thousands of workers have taken to the streets across France in nationwide protests against the rising cost of living, challenging President Emmanuel Macron. The demonstrations on Thursday were largely peaceful, but clashes erupted in Paris and Lyon, with police firing tear gas. France’s Interior Ministry estimated 575,000 participants, while the CGT union claimed 1.6 million joined the rallies. At least 448 people were arrested and 53 police officers injured, according to authorities. Protesters are demanding higher minimum wages, salary increases, tax reforms and better school conditions, as striking workers intensify pressure on the French government.
