LIVE: Hakeem Jeffries speaks after Democrat midterm victories
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries holds a briefing a day after Democrats’ midterm election victories across the country.
The wins put Jeffries — who represents a New York City congressional district — in line to become the first Black speaker of the US House of Representatives. He would face the dual challenge of opposing President Donald Trump while balancing the priorities of moderates and progressives within his party.
If elected speaker, Jeffries would preside over a Democratic majority sworn in during the first week of January, taking control from Republicans after four years in charge of the House.
