LIVE: AI Safety Fears Grow as Tech Insiders Warn of Risks and Call for Stronger Safeguards

Concerns over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence intensified in September and October, with technology researchers, industry executives and international officials warning that rapid AI development could pose serious risks to humanity.

On September 7, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that advanced AI could become an existential threat if systems escape testing environments or manipulate developers to prevent themselves from being switched off. He called for stronger safety guarantees and urged AI companies to take immediate action to reduce risks.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon also raised concerns after resigning, accusing both Anthropic and OpenAI of pursuing self-improving superintelligence without acting responsibly. AI safety researcher William MacAskill said such warnings from industry insiders should prompt greater public awareness.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently proposed a three-step framework to slow the pace of frontier AI development. His recommendations included independent safety evaluations, coordination among leading AI companies and international cooperation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk expressed support for the proposal.

However, US President Donald Trump argued that America must remain the global leader in AI, while Vice President JD Vance questioned why technology companies were asking the government to regulate them.

The developments highlight a growing debate over AI safety, corporate responsibility, government oversight and the race for global technological leadership.
