Israeli military says 2 soldiers were killed in West Bank
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army there to prepare for a full closure of the occupied West Bank after suspected gunmen shot and killed two Israeli soldiers.
Video from the Israeli army showed the firefight at a military checkpoint on Friday. The two attackers, both Palestinian, were killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The army said it prevented the men from advancing towards civilians. Following the shoot-out, Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the attack and vowed that Israel would retaliate.
“We will act, first of all, to demolish this place, to change it completely,” Netanyahu said. “We will evacuate the residents. We will go house by house. We will also remove the weapons there, and all the terror infrastructure will be dealt with and destroyed.”
After his comments, construction equipment could be seen starting to demolish homes near the site of the shooting.
All of this comes just days before Israeli elections, when voters will decide whether to give Netanyahu another term in office.
