Israel marks 78th Independence Day | DW News
Israel is celebrating 78 years of statehood amid deep division and uncertainty over the country’s future after two and a half years of war. Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, but the holiday, like all national holidays, is observed according to the lunar Hebrew calendar. It’s held at the end of Israel’s Memorial Day, when the country commemorates the fallen soldiers of Israel’s wars, and Israeli victims of hostile attacks. The events are deliberately paired to ensure celebration is always accompanied by remembrance.
