Canada is looking for new investment and closer ties beyond the United States as its trade relationship with Washington deteriorates under President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is courting some of the world’s biggest investors in Toronto while seeking closer ties with the European Union. But can Canada realistically reduce its economic dependence on its enormous neighbor?
More than 70% of Canadian trade is still tied to the United States, while Europe accounts for only a fraction of that. Trade expert Carlo Dade argues that Canada should be cautious about looking to Europe as the solution and says protecting US trade and expanding into the Indo-Pacific should be higher priorities.
We ask whether Donald Trump’s trade policies are merely forcing Canada to navigate a difficult period or accelerating a historic reorientation of Canadian economic and foreign policy.
