Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Belonging, is published globally by Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin, and is expected to hit bookshelves worldwide on November 10. While her political colleagues in the Congress party have been kept completely in the dark about the book’s contents, the deal to publish it in India is dead. HarperCollins is now likely to be the publisher in India, though they’ve stayed tight-lipped about it.
But why did the deal with Penguin India break down? An aide close to Sonia Gandhi confirmed to Hindustan Times that the publisher wanted several critical passages changed or deleted entirely, claiming it is part of their normal editorial process. But Gandhi refused, saying it was her story and there was no question of allowing any distortions to her memoir.
