In Parliament, Centre Says E20 Petrol May Lower Mileage In Older Vehicles | ‘No Engine Damage’
The Centre has told Parliament that E20 petrol may reduce fuel efficiency by around 3–5% in some older vehicles, but stressed there is no evidence of engine damage from the higher ethanol blend. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said the impact is largely limited to vehicles designed for E10 fuel. The government ruled out any return to E0 or E10 petrol, citing logistical challenges in maintaining multiple fuel supply chains. While some users may see a slight drop in mileage, the Centre maintains that E20 is safe, tested, and crucial for reducing oil imports and cutting emissions.
