‘I reported on everyone’s perspective’: Anand Giridharadas on New book on Jordan Neely Subway death
MS NOW political contributor Anand Giridharadas joins Morning Joe to discuss his new book, ‘Man in the Mirror: Hope, Struggle, and Belonging in an American City.’ The book examines the death of Jordan Neely through multiple perspectives. In May 2023, Neely, a 30-year-old Black homeless man, was killed after being put in a chokehold by Daniel Penny, a 24-year-old White United States Marine Corps veteran while riding the New York City Subway. Penny was eventually acquitted on a charge of criminally negligent homicide. The Morning Joe panel discusses Anand’s book which breaks down how the story was turned into a morality play: Penny became a hero or vigilante; Neely became a victim or menace. They became symbols, and then sides.
