Hurricane Lala has strengthened into a Category 1 storm as it barrels toward a rare landfall on Hawaii’s Big Island, which hasn’t seen a direct hit in 155 years. Officials have told residents to prepare for “life-threatening” conditions, including floods and mudslides.
