After decades on the rise, China is now nearly as powerful as the United States. As Xi Jinping proved with his imposition of rare-earth export controls last year, he now has leverage that can make Donald Trump back down. As Trump might put it, he has strong cards to play. But so does Trump. So how will this week’s summit meetings in Beijing play out? Can either leader come out on top, or will they fail to achieve their biggest asks?
