How Andy Burnham became Britain’s new prime minister
In the span of around one month, Andy Burnham went from mayor of Greater Manchester to returning to British Parliament, to leading the Labour Party and, now, running the United Kingdom.
On Monday, Burnham officially became Great Britain’s seventh prime minister since the start of 2016 after he met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
Burnham did not require a general election to get the top job. He won a special election to represent his geographic constituency in Parliament in June. He then ran to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the center-left Labour Party, and won. Because Labour is the majority party in the House of Commons, the leader of the party becomes the prime minister.
