Germany is polarized. That appears to be the lesson from recent state elections: winners in Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Saxony-Anhalt were parties on the political fringes – the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the far-left Left Party. The votes also delivered chastening results for parties in the political center, the so-called ‘People’s Parties’. So, what do the results tell us about the state of Germany and where it’s going?
