German chancellor calls state election a ‘disaster’ for his party but vows to stay on | DW News
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative CDU is dealt a massive blow in two state elections. In the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the far-right Alternative for Germany won its second regional election victory in succession. And the CDU may even fall short of the five percent threshold needed to enter parliament. In the capital Berlin, Merz’s party has lost its role at the head of the state government.
