EU-Canada LIVE: Kallas Warns EU-Funded Countries Over Potential ICC Withdrawal
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that countries receiving substantial EU financial assistance could face consequences if they abandon the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Speaking alongside Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand at the University of Montreal, Kallas argued that Europe needs to take a more transactional approach to its international partnerships. She said the EU should attach conditions to financial support and expect recipient countries to uphold fundamental principles, including support for the ICC.
Kallas’s remarks come amid growing pressure on the court following the Trump administration’s October 9 decision to impose sanctions on the institution. Washington argues that the ICC threatens US sovereignty, while the court has rejected the sanctions.
Anita Anand reaffirmed Canada’s support for international law, warning that international legal institutions are facing increasing pressure. She said Canada and its partners cannot retreat from the principles underpinning the international legal system.
The discussion also addressed the changing global trade order, US protectionism and closer Canada-EU cooperation. Anand highlighted Canada’s efforts to diversify trade partnerships beyond the United States, while Kallas called for stronger international cooperation amid geopolitical competition.
The remarks were made during the EU-Canada summit in Montreal, where leaders are discussing trade, technology, critical minerals, defence and security.
