Think the plague vanished with the Middle Age? Not quite. Yersinia pestis, the bacterium behind the Black Death, still causes infections around the world every year. While modern antibiotics can effectively treat the disease, early diagnosis remains critical. A recent suspected case in Russia has drawn international attention, but health authorities there say there’s no confirmed plague case and the current public health risk is considered low.
