Data science to alpinism: British woman makes Eiger history

Fay Manners became the first British woman to open a new route on the Eiger North Face after completing the feat with Swiss climbing partner Roger Schaeli.

After following the more conventional path of becoming a data scientist, Manners realized her heart was in the mountains and moved her life to follow her passion. The North Face took notice, bringing Manners on as an athlete, where she now represents the outdoor brand full time as an alpinist.

“I really only realized that it was possible when it was happening, because I still had in my mind that there was no way that a female could have a career in sports,” she told Reuters.
